WILLITS KIDS CLUB INVITES COMMUNITY FOR A “SNEAK PEEK”

By Karen Oslund

The Willits Kids Club is planning a “Sneak Peek” preview open house at its new youth center on Wednesday, October 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. The youth center is located at 1265 Blosser Lane, next door to Blosser Lane School.  The public is invited to drop in for finger foods and see, the inside of the new center for the first time.

Although the Club will not be completely finished and occupied, the Willits Kids Club board felt it was important to give the public a chance to see what the excitement is all about, “This is also a way to say thank you to all the people and organizations who have helped get this center built and are eager to have a look,” said board member Patty Bruder, who is in charge of the open house event.

At the open house, Kids Club members will serve as tour guides and take the public through the new building and describe how the different rooms will be used.

The Club is welcoming donations of items it needs to furnish the building, and expects to move its after school program into the new youth center in early November. Volunteers are also needed to help with landscaping, finishing touches, and with moving the after school program into the center.  Volunteers can call Karen Oslund at 459-3056.

WILLITS KIDS CLUB AWARDED REDWOODS GRANT

By Karen Oslund

Willits Kids Club has received a grant from the Save the Redwoods League to fund educational activities in the after school program related to redwoods and redwood habitat.  One of the grant activities will be to take walking trips in the community to map the location of local heritage redwoods.  The Club also plans to plant some redwoods in the vicinity of its new youth center, and the children will participate in the preparation, planting, and then watch the redwoods as they grow.  A field trip to a local redwood grove is in the planning stages.

“We are really pleased to have received this grant,” noted board member Karen Oslund.  “Some of our kids haven’t had the chance to visit our local redwood groves, and this is an important part of their local heritage.”

The grant, for $2,500, is part of educational activities sponsored by the Save the Redwoods League to “foster a deeper understanding of redwood forests through personal visits and educational experiences among a broad, diverse audience.”

The Kids Club will be inviting local naturalists to speak to the children about the special habitat allows redwoods to grow in their limited range in Northern California.
